چکیده

In many natural or artificial settings, agility and resilience are contradictory properties of agents and populations. The settings one can imagine for this contradiction include very different objects such as computer software (agile code is small, runs fast but is more vulnerable to attacks and failures, while resilient code can be bulky and run slowly but has built-in redundancy and robustness to all kinds of attacks and system failures), military units (nonarmored versus heavily armored units), commercial companies (small and lean, or large and slow), and many other situations of interest. In this paper we discuss a mathematical model which represents a population of agents in the presence of other malicious agents, and addresses the trade-off between (a) providing resilience to objects which gives them greater ability to resist attacks but reduces their mobility to attack and destroy their potential attackers, and (b) leaving them in a more agile state where they can more effectively search and destroy their potential attackers, but where they are themselves more vulnerable to attack.

Measuring the Agility of Networked Military Forces

Agility is regarded as important by many modern Defence forces, but the concept of agility is defined in many different ways. Flexibility, speed, and adaptability are some of the characteristics often associated with agility. In this paper, we outline a taxonomy which distinguishes six kinds of agility: tactical/operational agility, organisational agility, deployment agility, sustainment agilit...

Networks That Optimize a Trade-Off between Efficiency and Dynamical Resilience

In this paper we study networks that have been optimized to realize a trade-off between communication efficiency and dynamical resilience. While the first is related to the average shortest pathlength, we argue that the second can be measured by the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of the network. Best efficiency is realized in starlike configurations, while enhanced resilience is rel...

No Evidence of Trade-Off between Farm Efficiency and Resilience: Dependence of Resource-Use Efficiency on Land-Use Diversity

Efficiency in the use of resources stream-lined for expected conditions could lead to reduced system diversity and consequently endanger resilience. We tested the hypothesis of a trade-off between farm resource-use efficiency and land-use diversity. We applied stochastic frontier production models to assess the dependence of resource-use-efficiency on land-use diversity as illustrated by the Sh...

Physiological Trade-Offs Along a Fast-Slow Lifestyle Continuum in Fishes: What Do They Tell Us about Resistance and Resilience to Hypoxia?

It has recently been suggested that general rules of change in ecological communities might be found through the development of functional relationships between species traits and performance. The physiological, behavioural and life-history traits of fishes are often organised along a fast-slow lifestyle continuum (FSLC). With respect to resistance (capacity for population to resist change) and...

Considering Trade-offs When Assessing Resilience

This article describes the development of a prototype Resilience Analysis Grid for rail traffic management. The findings from testing of the initial model led to the identification of a set of potential vectors for improvement, in particular the need to integrate trade-offs. Based on Resilience Engineering trade-off theory this paper discusses how to integrate trade-offs into the system descrip...
